Scholarships and Criteria
The Community Scholarship Program is active from December 1 through June 30 each school year. The information contained on this page is NOT to be considered current at any other time. 1971 WMHS Alumni Scholarship Annual scholarship created by the Wood Memorial High School Class of 1971 Alumni Association. Criteria: Graduating seniors of Wood Memorial High School in good academic standing and pursuing post-secondary education at any accredited educational institution. Financial need is not a requirement but may be considered in the selection process. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Supplemental Requirements: Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages). Completion of the "Financial Assistance Questionnaire." Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $500. Arts Council of Gibson County Scholarship Annual scholarship created by the Arts Council of Gibson County to benefit graduating seniors of Gibson County high schools pursuing advanced education in the fields of art, drama, or music. From 1991 to 2007, the Arts Council of Gibson County fulfilled its mission of encouraging, assisting, coordinating, and promoting cultural arts activities in Gibson County by providing "Informances" and clinics for all Gibson County students in grades K-12. Criteria: Applicants must be a graduating senior from any Gibson County high school with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) planning to pursue a two- or four-year degree at any accredited college or university in the field of art, drama, or music. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Financial need is not a requirement but may be considered in the selection process. Supplemental Requirements: Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten double-spaced pages.) Completion of the "Financial Assistance Questionnaire." Two letters of recommendation in support of applicant's skills, abilities, and motivation related to his or her chosen field of undergraduate study. One letter should be from a teacher or other school personnel, and the other letter from someone unrelated to the applicant and not a Community Foundation board member. Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $2,000. George and Dorothy Eykamp Scholarship (College Scholarship Award) Annual scholarship created by Dorothy M. Eykamp to encourage the children of employees of Mid-States Rubber Products to further their education, to recognize academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and to motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential. Applicants must be the natural or adopted children of a current employee who has completed the equivalent of one year of full-time service with Mid-States Rubber Products prior to January 31 of the year in which the award is to be made. Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled in their sophomore year in a full-time course of study leading to a baccalaureate degree at an accredited four-year institution. Applicants must have graduated in the upper third of their high school senior class. Selection will be based on scholastic record, evidence of leadership, and career plans and objectives. Submission Instructions: If you are not currently attending a Gibson County high school, please mail or deliver your application packet (plus one copy) to the Gibson County Community Foundation, 109 N Hart Street, PO Box 180, Princeton, IN 47670. Otherwise, please submit application documents to your high school guidance counselor. Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $1,000. Renewable for consecutive junior and senior years if recipient has maintained a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) during the sophomore and junior years. Total awards will not exceed $3,000. Renewal award amounts may differ from the original award. Renewal award amounts may differ from the original award. Bob Key Memorial Education Scholarship Annual scholarship established by Mary Key in memory of her husband. Bob Key (1942-1995) was a husband and father whose chosen vocation was farming. Throughout his life, he pursued the perfection of his physical and managerial skills. He often took continuing education courses and taught seminars at Purdue University. He believed that success was achieved by a person's own ability to accomplish a task as efficiently as possible. The Bob Key Memorial Education Scholarship is an appropriate continuation of his enthusiasm for lifelong learning. Criteria: Applicants must be a graduating high school senior, a high school graduate, or must have received a high school equivalency certificate. Available to Gibson County residents desiring to improve their ability or knowledge through completion of a seminar, short course, or post-secondary education. Award also may be used to obtain educational materials. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Supplemental Requirements: Two letters of recommendation from supervisors, co-workers, or others knowledgeable about the applicant but who are unrelated to the applicant and not Community Foundation board members. Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages) explaining the nature of the course, seminar, or educational materials for which the applicant seeks award and explaining how the course, seminar or educational materials will improve the applicant's proven skills. Otherwise, please submit application documents to your high school guidance counselor. Application Deadline: June 14, 2008. Award Amount: $1,130. Multiple scholarships may be awarded from total amount listed. Larry A. Kissel Purdue Challenge Award Annual scholarship created by John and Phyllis Kissel in memory of their son, who died in a 1995 train accident. The award recognizes, rewards and encourages academic perseverance. Criteria: Applicants must be graduates of a Gibson County high school and residents of Gibson County. Applicants must be enrolled full or part time as a second-, third-, or fourth-year undergraduate at any Purdue University campus, must have completed the equivalent of two full-time semesters at Purdue or another institution, and must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at Purdue University for continuation of post-secondary education. Prior enrollment at Purdue University is not a condition but will be considered in the selection process. Selection will be based on the applicant's surpassing expectations as indicated by past and current scholastic performance, on financial need, and on success in overcoming cultural, health and domestic obstacles, and on the required essay. Supplemental Requirements: Statement of Perseverance (not to exceed two typewritten double-spaced pages) describing the challenges faced in order to pursue aspirations and educational goals and describing successes at overcoming cultural, health and domestic obstacles. Documentation of enrollment as a sophomore, junior or senior at a Purdue University campus. Completion of the "Financial Assistance Questionnaire." Application Deadline: June 14, 2008. Award Amount: $1,220. Renewal applications will be considered provided the applicant remains an undergraduate student at Purdue University with at least one semester of work uncompleted. Multiple scholarships may be awarded from total amount listed. Roy and Dorotha McCarty Scholarship Annual scholarship created by the estate of Roy G. McCarty. Criteria: Graduating high school seniors who have successfully completed coursework and demonstrated outstanding promise in the shop/welding vocational programs of Gibson Southern High School. Applicants must be planning to pursue post-secondary education in vocational arts at any accredited college or university. Selection will be based on applicant's skills and abilities, recommendations from vocational teachers, academic performance, and the required essay. Supplemental Requirements: Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed four typewritten, double-spaced pages) describing the benefits the applicant has received from vocational education and his or her plans for further education or training. Letter of Recommendation from one or more of applicant's vocational teachers. Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $1,530. Betty Ann McCullough Education Grant Annual scholarship created by the family and friends of Betty Ann McCullough. Criteria: Graduating seniors of Princeton Community High School demonstrating outstanding perseverance in mathematics and language arts throughout high school. Applicants must have surpassed expectations as indicated by past performance; intend to continue education in the mathematics field in college or vocational school; and succeeded in overcoming cultural, health and domestic obstacles. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Supplemental Requirements: Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten double-spaced pages.) Completion of the "Financial Assistance Questionnaire." Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: Two awards of $1,000 each. Warren W. Parke Memorial Scholarship Annual scholarship created in loving memory of Warren W. Parke by his daughter to honor his passion for sports, his contributions to the community, and his commitment to education. Criteria: Graduating seniors of Wood Memorial High School planning to pursue full-time enrollment at an accredited college or university. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), have been involved in a school-sponsored sport each year of high school, and be regularly involved in community service. Students who have been awarded full "cost of attendance" scholarships as defined by the NCAA are not eligible to apply. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Supplemental Requirements: Essay (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages) explaining why the applicant believes he or she should be considered for the award. Letter of Recommendation from one or more of the applicant's coaches verifying that the applicant is a dedicated team player who has demonstrated good sportsmanship, a positive mental attitude, team spirit, and a love of the sport(s) in which he or she has participated. Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $550. Consideration for the following scholarship requires completion of a separate application form as indicated. Mark Kniese Scholarship Annual scholarship created by August Neal in memory of Mark Kniese, who had been a counselor with her at Camp Carson in Princeton. Criteria: Applicants must be Camp counselors at YMCA Camp Carson located in Princeton, Indiana, planning post-secondary education at an accredited college or university. In addition to demonstrating dedication to and rapport with campers, applicants must exhibit the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
