Recent GrantsWith the help of the Gibson County Community Foundation (GCCF), ten nonprofit organizations now have substantial funding for charitable projects and initiatives. On October 4th, the GCCF's board of trustees announced the grant recipients for the year of 2010. The financing of these various projects is made possible by a number of endowed funds established by benefactors in Gibson County. Among these are the Friends of Gibson County Fund, Gibson County Community Foundation Trustees Fund, Melvin Oing Memorial Fund, Ray J. (Jerry) Watson and the Ruth L. Watson Memorial Fund, Toyota Fund, and the recently created Smithville Charitable Foundation Fund. With the grants from these funds, initiatives regarding community development, education, health, human services, art/culture and other civic efforts will be made possible.
The GCCF grant recipients are:
1. East Gibson Dollars for Scholars: $1,000 from the Toyota Fund will be used for funding of scholarships at Wood Memorial High School.
2. Princeton Area Dollars for Scholars: $1,000 from the Toyota Fund will be distributed for the funding of scholarships for students at Princeton High School.
3. South Gibson Dollars for Scholars: $1,000 will be given from the Toyota Fund for the funding of scholarships at Gibson Southern High School.
4. Ronald McDonald House of Indiana: The Melvin Oing's Memorial Fund's contribution of $91 as well as the Friends of Gibson County Fund's contribution of $909 will be used to assist Gibson County families staying at the house. The total amount granted will be $1,000.
5. The Salvation Army (Tools for Schools): With a total of $2,000, the Toyota Fund will donate $1,637 and the Friends of Gibson County Fund will donate $363 for backpacks and school suppplies for children in need within Gibson County.
6. The Salvation Army (Summer Recess): For the Summer Recess program, the Smithville Charitable Foundation Fund will provide $201 and the Friends of Gibson County Fund will provide $1,799, totaling to $2,000, to fund a summer day camp for Princeton area school children.
7. Gibson County Area Rehabilitation Centers: $65 from the Gibson County Community Foundation Trustee Fund and $760 from the Friends of Gibson County Fund will finance transportation for Project Search, totaling in $825.
8. American Red Cross of Gibson County: In order to help support the funding of Disaster Relief, $265 will be given from the Ray J. (Jerry) Watson and the Ruth L. Watson Memorial Fund and $1,135 will be given from the Friends of Gibson County Fund which will result in $1,400 granted.
9. Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra: $1,000 from the Friends of Gibson County will be used for funding to conduct orchestral concerts for Gibson County students in the third through fifth grades.
10. Bread of Life Ministries: The Friends of Gibson County Fund will $2,150 to help fund the Food Project.
In addition to these nonprofit organizations, the GCCF will provide a $1,500 scholarship from the Friends of Gibson County Fund to the Alternate Lilly Scholarship recipient for 2011 and transfer $39 of the same fund to the Emergency Grant Fund. "The Gibson County Community Foundation strives to make a difference within the community and to enable others to help as well," says Tami Muckerheide, Foundation Director. "The grants these donors are able to provide through the Foundation will be able to help relieve some of the current needs of our community and truly make a difference in people's lives." The GCCF will be hosting its annual awarding of grants dinner on Tuesday, November 16th at 6:30 p.m. at The Log Inn to recognize the grant recipients.
